Guilty (Ayumi Hamasaki album)

''Guilty'' is the ninth studio album by Japanese singer-songwriter Ayumi Hamasaki, released January 1, 2008 by Avex Trax. Hamasaki wrote all of the lyrics on ''Guilty'', but did not compose any of its songs; instead, she enlisted frequent collaborators Tetsuya Yukumi and Kazuhiro Hara, among others, to handle the album's composition. Two weeks after its release Avex announced over 750,000 copies of ''Guilty'' had been shipped to stores, though the album is only certified 2x Platinum in Japan.〔[http://www.ahsforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68591 [news+pic] ayu back to Japan! - Ayumi Hamasaki Sekai]〕
''Guilty'' was preceded by the release of three singles. The lead single, "Glitter"/"Fated" was released July 18, 2007. It debuted at number one on the Oricon singles chart, with first-week sales of 110,165 copies. However, it sold less copies than her previous single, "Bold & Delicious"/"Pride", becoming her poorest performing single since "Depend on You". Second single "Talkin' 2 Myself" topped the charts in Japan as well, but barely sold more than 100,000 copies in its nine-week chart run. The third single from ''Guilty'' was Hamasaki's first digital single, "Together When...". As it was not a physical single, it was ineligible to chart in Japan, but it became the highest selling single from ''Guilty'': it was downloaded over 750,000 times as a ringtone, receiving a triple-platinum certification, and downloaded in full over 250,000 times, receiving a platinum certification. Combined, the singles from ''Guilty'' sold 276,831 copies.
Though released on January 1, 2008, ''Guilty'' had begun appearing in stores the preceding December. Avex had employed this marketing strategy with Hamasaki's albums before, as Oricon has only 51 weeks rather than 52; therefore, the first-week sales of ''Guilty'' were actually accumulated in two weeks. Nonetheless, Guilty had her poorest first-week sales at the time, selling 432,113 copies in its first week. It became her first album to miss the number one position, debuting at number two and peaking there. ''Guilty'' was, however, a strong international seller, debuting at number one on the International charts in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan. It was the second highest-selling Japanese album in Taiwan and China in 2008, only after Hamasaki's own ''A Complete: All Singles''. ''Guilty'' became her lowest seller at that time, selling 568,288 copies in its 16-week chart run. It was the 17th best selling album in Japan of 2008, and the sixth-highest selling by a female artist.
==Information==
''Guilty'' sold more than 202,000 copies within its first initial week of release, and the combined totals for the first and second weeks put it at the number-two spot with 432,113 copies sold, with Kobukuro's ''url=http://japanjpop.com/2008/01/11/oricon-daily-charts-top-10-albums-misia-takes-the-1-position-1907/ r=Japanjpop.com |date=2008-12-25 |accessdate=2010-04-09}}〕
The album was released in two versions in Taiwan, a CD+DVD and a CD-only version. The first initial copies on sale came with a limited edition photo book. The CD+DVD version included all the music videos from the single "glitter" to the digital single "Together When...", including making-ofs. Though the official release date was January 1, 2008, the album was released in stores a week early. The album debuted at number two on the G-Music Combo Chart behind boy band Fahrenheit's second album ''Two-Sided Fahrenheit'' but topped the charts on the G-Music J-Pop Chart having 39.78% of all Japanese albums sold in Taiwan. On February 28, ''Guilty'' took the #1 position on HMVV HK Chart after 56 days on the chart.〔(Guilty #1 at HMVV HK chart - Ayumi Hamasaki Sekai )〕
Hamasaki's official website announced on March 17, 2008 that ''Guilty'' will be released digitally in over 26 countries worldwide, a first for any Japanese artist. The album will be digitally released in North America, Oceania, Europe as well as Asian countries where the physical version of the album is already released in Apple iTunes stores. "My all" was covered by Anthony Martinez, a French pop singer under the name of "Mon tout" in French. This is officially Hamasaki's first release outside Asia.
